luigiIt’s been a big year for Mario’s little brother, Luigi.

Always the faithful sidekick to his brother Mario, Luigi is finally getting some solo time in the spotlight. This year Nintendo released two big titles for both the Wii U and 3DS—and the name “Mario” is nowhere to be found in either title.

Nintendo released Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, New Super Luigi U on the Wii U and 3DS. Both received positive reviews, and it turns out that Luigi has quite the following.

Luigi’s loyal fan base idolizes him for being a sidekick and for his quirkiness. Now that he is taking the spotlight his fans couldn’t be more excited for future games.  It turns out that these projects are launching this year, which also happens to be the 30th anniversary of the game that Luigi first appeared in.

Apparently, Nintendo seems to agree. 2013 is ‘The Year of Luigi’, and if all indications are right, it could be just the thing Nintendo fans are looking for.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the Mario Brothers franchise, sees the new Super Luigi U as a future model for the company. Miyamoto has decided to put more emphasis on Luigi due to the strong internal support at Nintendo, and the strong support from loyal fans that want to use Luigi for their game play.

When deciding to feature Luigi, Miyamoto wanted to not only create a single product, but wanted to take advantage of distribution methods, potentially creating additional downloadable content for those games.

Miyamoto couldn’t be happier that all their efforts came together for a new face for Nintendo. The very beloved character even has his own Facebook page in celebration of “Another Famous Mario Brother, Luigi.”
